Healing of Bone Cavities Following Application of Hemostatics

Abstract
Hemostatic agents such as epinephrine, Gelfoam, Surgicel and bone wax have been used to control hemorrhage during periapical surgery. The use of these substances is associated with systemic or localized side effects. Ferric sulfate (Cut-Trol), an
astringent, has recently become a widely used substance during periapical surgery. The purpose of this study was to investigate the short term effect(s) of application of ferric sulfate on healing of bone cavities in cat mandibles. After
anesthetizing
ten cats and raising full mucoperiosteal flaps, two 1.5¡¿1.5 mm cavities were prepared on either side of the mandibular symphysis of each cat using # 4 high speed round bur under water spray. A small cotton pellet impregnated with either ferric
sulfate
or sterile saline was placed in these cavities for five minutes and rinsed with saline. Histologic findings of bony cavities two and a half weeks later revealed that application of ferric sulfate results in formation of less mature fibrous
connective
tissue, less bone formation, more retained coagulum and pronounced froeign body reactions compared to sites treated with sterile saline. These findings indicate that application of ferric sulfate to bony cavities results in delayed healing in
cats.
